Portuguese MP Seeks International Arrest Warrant against Indonesia's Suharto
Lisbon, Nov. 16 (Lusa) - A Portuguese MP has formally requested the attorney general's
office to issue an international arrest warrant for former Indonesian ruler Suharto on
charges of genocide in East Timor. Nuno Correia da Silva, a conservative Popular Party MP,
disclosed his request Sunday, saying he had been motivated by the recent moves by Spanish
courts seeking the extradition for trial of Chilean military ruler Augusto Pinochet. In
his request to Attorney General Narciso Cunha Rodrigues, Correia da Silva notes that under
international law East Timor remains territory under Portuguese administration. - Lusa
