Belo was arrested with three other East Timorese youths, Agapito Belo, Carlos Pinto Belo and Ernesto Amaral Belo, during a military operation in Kaisida hamlet, Baucau. During the operation, the military forces attacked seven houses in the hamlet, arresting the four East Timorese men and confiscating personal property (see UA 14/98 for details). The ETHRC previously reported that the other three detainees were released after short-term detention. ETHRC sources have now confirmed that Marcos Belo has also been released and that the personal property which was confiscated during the military operation will be returned to the rightful owners through church mediators located in Baucau.
