STATEMENT FROM THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF TIMORESE RESISTANCE ON THE 3rd YEAR OF
INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY DAY FOR EAST TIMOR AND THE 7th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DILI MASSACRE
MANILA, NOVEMBER 12, 1998
HE ABU HARTONO Ambassador Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia Diplomatic Corps, Peace
Loving people, Friends Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today, I am on behalf of my fellow East Timorese Youth National Liberation Front and
the National Council of Timorese Resistance pleased to share with you the message of His
Excellency Mr. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, President of the National Council of Timorese
Resistance that imprisoned for 20 years in his leadership role for the liberation of
motherland and people of East Timor from Indonesian colonialist, in the infamous of
Cipinang Prison, Jatinegara, Jakarta Timur, Indonesia.
In his message he entirely appeal to the international community that; "Autonomy
is not the final solution for the conflict of East Timor. It is only referendum that can
solved the problem.
On the other hand, he also says that in order to achieve the authentic democratization
in Indonesia, first of all is to have a full recognition of the fundamental rights of East
Timorese people to determine their own political status through a just, comprehensive and
peaceful self-determination".
Today, once again we are commemorating the most prestigious tragedy that consistently
inflicting on us in the struggling for the genuine liberation of Maubere people and that
is the Dili massacre on November 12, 1991.
As the world has known that seven years ago, we the East Timorese Youth National
Liberation movement gather together at St. Anthony Lisbon Parish of Motael with intention
for the so-called Thanksgiving Mass, in commemorating the twelve days of the death of our
fellow Sebastiao Gomes that was murdered by the anti-independence movement inside of that
Catholic church.
This occasion was fallow by a peaceful procession moving towards Santa Cruz cemetery
where we are going to exposing a closing prayer, to light the candles that stands for
truth, justice and peace for the soul of our brethren that killed by the oppressor's.
On the other hand, it was also aiming to highlight the visits of Parliamentary of
Portuguese still considering as the administering power of East Timor by the United
Nations.
Hopeless to say; the offender that has no respect for the supreme value of justice and
truth disrupted such a good intentions.
As the consequence of this the killer's - the Indonesian military open fire without
warning and killed our fellow Timorese, men and women, young and old for more then 300
innocent as the victim of repression, and it was not even including the disappearances.
The worst thing is that we do not know where are their bodies, their bounds, their
grabs and their souls. Until today there is no justice for them at all.
Today, as we celebrate the 7th anniversary of the Dili massacre and the third year of
the International Solidarity Day for East Timor, instead of vigilante we call on;
Indonesia government to:
1. Abolish the fascist military invasion and withdraw its military from East Timor; 2.
Stop any forms of human rights violation in East Timor; 3. Upholding the fundamental
rights of East Timorese people for a genuine Self-determination; 4. Immediate
unconditional release of our President Mr. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao and all East Timorese
political prisoners both inside and outside of East Timor; and 5. The presence of United
Nations Human Rights Commission to establish an Independent offices in East Timor.
United Nations:
We also entirely call on the United Nations Human Rights Commission and the
Secretary-General of the United Nations His Excellency Mr. Kofi Annan to continue use His
good offices to find a peaceful, just and comprehensive solution for the people of East
Timor through the implementation of all the relevant resolutions passed by the United
Nations.
Above all, we believe that this can only be achieved with the inclusion of the
President of CNRT - the National Council of Timorese Resistance and the Representatives of
the National Council of Timorese Resistance in any negotiations on the political status of
East Timor.
Solidarity Formations:
To all of you beloved solidarity formations throughout the world that as we are also
preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human rights,
let us call on the United Nations Human Rights Commission, the European Union, Amnesty
International, Church movements, and specifically, for the "Pro-Reforms and democracy
in Indonesia and the Asian-Pacific Coalition for East Timor" to pressure on ASEAN
leaders:
1. to respect the inalienable rights of Timorese people for self-determination;
2. to support the inclusion of the National Council of Timorese Resistance on the peace
talk with the United Nations, Portuguese and Indonesian government to find a
comprehensive, just and peaceful solution for the quest of East Timor.
To my fellow peace loving "Maubere" people of East Timor:
We are all encouraged to live the truth of love for justice, freedom and equality to
collaborate with the entire peacemaker throughout the world in fighting the fascist and
colonialist for a better prosperous life where peace and justice reign.
Let us strengthen our unity and insist the world to have an internationally acceptable
solution for the conflict of East Timor.
In the name of justice, equality, freedom and peace! I appeal to Indonesian arm forces
- military to stop the bloodshed in East Timor!!!
Free East Timor!!! Free Xanana Gusmao!!!
I remain in Peace,
Roberto Soaers

PRAYER FOR PEACE IN EAST TIMOR Adupted by: Roberto Cabral
O God, my Father in heaven,
I believe that you are the loving Father of all peoples, of all races and of all
nations all Over the world.
I believe that you sent your Son Jesus into our world to reveal the depth, intensity
and immensity of your love and compassion for us your children.
I believe that Jesus came to us to give us life, to heal all divisions among us, to
make us all one through His Holy Spirit, to restore us to our true dignity, to lead us to
our true destiny with you in heaven, to reveal who you are, God with us.
I believe that Jesus has shown us the way to live as your true children. I believe that
the way of Jesus is a way of peace and reconciliation, a way of unity and community, and a
way of love without measure.
I believe that Jesus always obeyed your will even when it meant dying a death of
crucifixion on Mount Calvary. Help me to follow his way of peace and of love.
I believe that as I pray now you breath forth your Holy Spirit upon me, since he is the
source of unity and love in the Church, I pray that he may unite us all into one Body in
Christ to the praise of your glory and that he will renew the face of our world this day.
I believe that this same Holy Spirit teaches us how to pray and that he prays in us
continusely. I ask his help and guidance as I pray for peace in our world this day,
particularly for the motherland and people of East Timor.
I unite myself now with all those who pray for peace and with all those who actively
work for the spread of your Kingdom of peace all over the world.
Grant peace to all our hearts, Peace to all homes and families, Peace to the Church,
Peace to all nations this day forever.
I pray this in the name of Jesus, your Son, the Prince of Peace and my saviour and
through the intercession of Mary, the Quen of Peace. Amen.
