women to visit Indonesia GENEVA, Nov 11
The UN special expert on violence against women will pay a 10-day visit to Indonesia
starting November 20, a UN human rights spokesman said Wednesday. The visit by Radhika
Coomaraswamy will be the first of a UN special rapporteur in her capacity to the Southeast
Asian country. Jose Luiz Dias, spokesman for UN human rights high commissioner Mary
Robinson, said one purpose of her trip was to investigate alleged cases of rape during
mass riots in May in Jakarta which sparked the downfall of former Indonesian President
Suharto.
Dias said that the itinerary of the UN expert had not been finalized. UN sources said
she is aiming to go to East Timor and the remote Indonesian province of Irian Jaya.
