Ramos-Horta applauds Pinochet's arrest
Paris, 18 October 1998 - "I join with the millions of people around the world -
and the Chileans in particular - as they rejoice over the news of the detention of the
Chilean dictator in London," said Jose Ramos-Horta, 1996 Nobel Peace Prize
co-laureate upon receiving the information.
Mr. Ramos-Horta added that he applauded the courage of the Spanish judges whose
relentless efforts will hopefully bring to justice the instigator and symbol of one of the
most brutal repression of the 1970's.
"I hope that the detention of Pinochet, which will hopefully be followed by his
trial, will send a clear signal to other dictators such as Suharto and to the Indonesian
generals who have perpetrated war crimes and crimes against humanity that they will not
escape with impunity."
