Mr Gusmao, who was yesterday moved from jail to house arrest in Jakarta, welcomed the announcement by Indonesia President BJ Habibie that he would like to see the issue resolved by the end of the year and East Timor given full independence. "I think it is very good news, it is what we are fighting for," Mr Gusmao said in an interview on SBS news tonight. But he said he "regretted" Australia's opposition to East Timor's full independence. "It shows that the Australian government doesn't believe in our capacity to achieve peace and harmony with East Timorese people," Mr Gusmao said. He said that it would be "very, very good" if he was released soon to lead the resistance movement but had received no official news. Back to February Menu |
