President to visit E. Timor
JAKARTA (JP): President Abdurrahman Wahid
is scheduled to arrive in Dili on Feb. 24 to open an Indonesian interest
section office in the capital of the former Indonesian province of East
Timor.
The East Nusa Tenggara provincial
administration spokesman, Nani Kosapilawan, said on Monday the opening
will precede the start of the first congress of the National Unity Forum (FPB)
to be held in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, on Jan. 26.
"President Abdurrahman Wahid has
given his confirmation to FPB to open the congress," Nani said after
a meeting with East Nusa Tenggara Governor Piet Tallo in Kupang.
Two FPB board members -- Tito Batistuta
and Armindo Soares -- told reporters on Monday the forum aims to
accommodate prointegrationist East Timorese living in Indonesia.
They said several East Timorese figures,
such as F.X. Lopez da Cruz, former prointegration unit commanders and
former members of the East Timorese legislative council will attend the
meeting.
The congress is expected to discuss ways
to promote understanding between the East Timorese and forge a common
political perception.
