East Timor: Dili Officials Meet Indonesian Leaders in Jakarta 23
Jan-12:07
Demonstrators greeted two senior East Timorese officials Tuesday in
Jakarta as Jose Ramos Horta and Mari Alkatiri began an official visit for
talks with Indonesian authorities.
A small group of Timorese and Indonesian protestors, chanting anti-UN
slogans, gathered outside the United Nations offices, where Dili's
representatives briefed foreign ambassadors on the latest developments in
East Timor.
Earlier, Ramos Horta and Alkatiri, who hold the foreign affairs and
economic portfolios, respectively, in Dili's transitional cabinet, held
talks with Indonesian Attorney General Marzuki Daruzman, a key figure in
investigations into atrocities committed during East Timor's 1999
independence plebiscite.
Ramos Horta and Alkatiri were also scheduled to meet with Foreign
Minister Alwi Shihab and Parliament Speaker Akbar Tanjung.
After their Jakarta visit, the Dili officials are to fly to New York
for UN Security Council discussions on East Timor's transition to
independence and the extension of the UN mandate in the territory.
