15 Jun 01 15:46 East Timor: Next Donors Conference Set for Oslo in
December
The next East Timor donors conference will be held in Oslo in December,
coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize, the
Norwegian ambassador to Australia reaffirmed Friday in Canberra.
The diplomat confirmed the invitation to Oslo at the end of the two-day
East Timor donors conference in the Australian capital.
The foreign minister of East Timor's transition administration, Jose
Ramos Horta, highlighted in comments to Lusa that the Oslo conference
would serve to publicize the cause of East Timor.
"The Prize was given to Tibet and the problem wasn't resolved. It
was given to Burma and the problem wasn't resolved. It was given to the
peace process in the Middle East and the peace process has practically
fallen apart", said Ramos Horta, who is a co-laureate of the 1996
Nobel Peace Prize.
He added that the first donors conference in 2002 would likely be held
in Dili, "perhaps at the ministerial level".
East Timor, which had been occupied by Indonesia for 24 years, voted
for independence in 1999 and has since been governed by a UN transition
administration charged with overseeing the transition to full
independence, expected in 2002.
