2. Bishop Belo: New diocese awaits Vatican approval
1. Xanana emerges in PD campaign (Suara Timor Lorosae, front
page
Timor Lorosae Presidential candidate Xanana Gusmao made a surprise
appearance at the Democracy Party (PD) campaign yesterday at the Democracy
Field in Dili.
Xanana’s appearance caused a huge turnout at the PD campaign.
But the independence leader told those present that he was not
campaigning for PD.
“I here to cover the event by taking pictures. I was just walking
around and I decided to drop by. Am I not free to go where I like?”
asked Xanana.
The independence leader was then seen taking photographs.
When PD campaign manager Constancio Pinto announced that PD was
nominating Xanana as Timor Lorosae’s President and Jose Ramos-Horta as
Vice-President, the crowd gathered at the Democracy Field applauded.
“Let’s not forget the sacrifices these two brothers made for the
country,” said Constancio.
2. Bishop Belo: New diocese awaits Vatican
approval (Suara Timor Lorosae, front page second lead)
The leader of the Dili diocese Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo said last
week that the decision to start a new diocese in Timor Lorosae still was
with the Vatican.
“We are still waiting for the Vatican decision. It very much depends
on when Timor Lorosae becomes fully independent. If independence is in
2002, that means that the new diocese will be started in either 2004 or
2005,” said Bishop Belo in an interview with STL.
According to Bishop Belo the final Vatican decision was needed because
the administrative needs of all the dioceses will be reassessed once a new
government is in place.
“We will have to see the numbers of Catholics in all the districts.
If for instance the number of Catholics are growing in Los Palo and if
there is a need for another bishop, then we will propose it to the
Vatican. It the same with the other districts,” said Bishop Belo.
Meanwhile, Bishop Belo said there were plans to start the new diocese
in Same. Bishop Belo said the names of three priests had been sent to the
Vatican for consideration to lead the new diocese as bishop.
