04 Jun 02 13:13 East Timor: Portuguese universities ready to bolster
Dili's education programs
Portuguese universities are ready and willing to increase their
cooperation with East Timor, simply awaiting Lisbon´s blessing and
financing, the executive-director of the Foundation of Portuguese
Universities said Monday.
"As far as the Timorese are concerned we could double the number
of courses and students" in Dili, Monica Pimentel told Lusa.
Portuguese professors currently offer courses in economics, agronomy,
electrical engineering, computer sciences, and Portuguese language
teaching at the University of East Timor.
In a parallel aid program, 233 Timorese students are studying at
Portuguese universities and another 44 will get scholarships in September,
Pimentel said.
Education is a priority area of cooperation for Portugal´s aid
programs in East Timor.
