S. Hasegawa named as U.N. deputy representative in E. Timor
NEW YORK, June 14 (Kyodo) - U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan on Friday
appointed Sukehiro Hasegawa of Japan as his new deputy special
representative in East Timor, the United Nations said.
Prior to this appointment, Hasegawa was special adviser to the U.N.
Development Program (UNDP) on crime prevention and recovery, stationed in
Geneva.
Hasegawa, 59, has worked for UNDP since 1969, and has held senior posts
with the agency in Rwanda, Cambodia, Nepal and Indonesia, as well as
serving with the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
In East Timor, he will also serve as the UNDP resident coordinator, a
U.N. spokesman said.
Hasegawa succeeds Dennis McNamara, who was with the U.N. Transitional
Mission in East Timor, the preceding U.N. mission in East Timor, and
during the start-up of the present U.N. Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET).
Japan has dispatched a 680-member Ground Self-Defense Force engineering
team and a 10-member headquarters team to UNMISET.
