East Timor: Fire destroyed most Becora prison records

Dili, Jan. 21 (Lusa) - The fire which gutted the administrative building of East Timor's largest prison before dawn Monday also destroyed, contrary to first reports, most of Becora prison's archives.

Justice Minister Ana Pessoa disclosed the loss late Monday, saying the only documentation saved related to former inmates.

In a related development, the UN mission in Dili said reconstruction of the prison administration building would cost more than USD 200,000 and urged international donors to aid Dili.

Preliminary investigations indicated the fire, which caused no deaths or injuries, had started accidentally.
