East Timor: Lisbon minister reviews labor, social security cooperation

Dili, July 21 (Lusa) - Lisbon`s minister of labor and social security, António José de Castro Bagão Félix, began an official visit to East Timor on Monday aimed at boosting cooperation with the Dili authorities.

Bagão Felix said his five-day trip was aimed to develop bilateral cooperation in the "decisive areas of social security and labor" and he would meet several Dili government officials responsible for these areas.

"They are areas where close cooperation is needed, as they deal with people and it is essential that Timor gets assistance for social protection, professional training and local employment initiatives", said the Lisbon minister, who meets Timorese state secretary for labor and solidarity, Arsénio Bano.

The Lisbon official said he would be discussing Timor`s labor laws with his Dili opposites, as well as special programs planned in the agriculture, civil construction, tourism and new technology sectors.

In a new nation such as Timor "it is crucial to implant the notion of a social conscience", said Bagão Felix, adding there is no true development without respect for human dignity.
