Timor-Leste Local Media Monitoring Dili, 13 Marc 03,
TP, STL: Austria's Ambassador Presented Credentials
Austria's Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Bernhard Zimburg, officially
presented his credentials to President Gusmão on Wednesday at the Palace
of Ashes in Dili. During the official ceremony Mr. Zimburg said that the
presentation of his credentials to the President symbolizes the start of
good diplomatic relations between the two countries. Zimburg added that
the Austrian government is ready to support the Timorese government with
donations of equipment for the health sector, and aid for the
establishment of democratic institutions. Austria is willing to help civil
society groups as part of the development of the country, he added.
TVTL: President of the Court of Appeal Was Appointed
A Presidential decree dated March 10 nominated Claudio de Jesus Ximenes
as President of the Court of Appeal on Timor-Leste. According to a press
release issued by the office of the President, the nomination represents
"a major step towards the full establishment of the legal system in
Timor-Leste as it activates the Court of Appeal, which will function as
the highest judicial institution in Timor-Leste, until the establishment
of the Supreme Court of Justice". The document added "the Court
of Appeal also constitutes a fundamental resource to citizens and their
right to appeal decisions by lower ranking courts". President Gusmao
considers this decree to be "of crucial importance", says the
press release, which states that Claudio de Jesus Ximemes has 21 years of
experience as a judge of a district court in Portugal.
TP, Lusa - Dili's Book Fair Closed Doors
Dili's First Book Fair, organized by the Portuguese Government, closed
its doors on Wednesday. During 10 days, the book exhibition - which was
described by its organizers as a "tremendous success" - was
visited by 25,000 people. Seventy five per cent of the 120,000 books in
display were sold, the majority of them for under two American dollars.
UNMISET and UNESCO had a joint stand. According to the media, one of the
highlights of the cultural events during the Fair was an exhibition of
"capoeira", a mixture of dance and martial arts, performed by
PKF's Brazilian soldiers.
