Timor: Dili indicts 17 militiamen, Indonesian soldiers in 1999 atrocities
Dili, Sept. 30 (Lusa) - East Timor indicted 14 pro-Jakarta militiamen
and three Indonesian soldiers Tuesday for human rights crimes committed
around the time of the country's 1999 independence plebiscite.
Militia boss Laurentino Soares and 13 of his fighters were accused of
murdering 10 independence activists in Oecussi district in September and
October of 1999.
The three Indonesian soldiers were accused of killing two civilians.
Dili's indictments, observers said, were largely symbolic as all 17
suspects are believed to be in Indonesia.
Jakarta refuses extradition requests related to the bloody anti-
independence campaign carried out by its proxy militias and Indonesian
security forces.
Dili said it was forwarding arrest warrants to Jakarta and Interpol.
