Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara, July 2 (ANTARA) - Jakarta has rejected a proposal
made by the administration of Belu district, East Nusa Tenggara province to
import duty-free cars from East Timor.
"We have thoroughly assessed the proposal and presented it to the
central government, which rejected it due to technical considerations,"
head of the provincial industry and trade office, Supartantyo, said on Friday.
He however did not elaborate on the "technical considerations".
He said the proposal to import duty-free cars has not been tabled only by
East Nusa Tenggara but by other provinces as well, but all have been rejected by
the central government.
"Papua has been given a special permit to import duty-free cars, but it
was given by the previous government without consideration. There were other
considerations," he added.
Supartantyo said what the central government should do is to make the western
part of East Nusa Tenggara an industrial area like Batam Island in Riau
province.
