East Timor: President Gusmão heading to Mozambique for visit, ACP summit
Maputo, June 16 (Lusa) - East Timorese President Xanana Gusmão begins a
weeklong visit to Mozambique Thursday, his first to one of Africa's five
Lusophone countries.
During his stay in Maputo, Gusmão will also attend for the first time a
summit of ACP leaders from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
Dili's chargé d'affairs in the Mozambican capital, Marina Alkatiri, the wife
of the Timorese prime minister, told Lusa Wednesday that Gusmão would
participate in discussions of "all subjects" raised at the summit of
the ACP, a grouping newly independent East Timor joined in March 2003.
Gusmão's visit to Mozambique, a key backer of Timor's long resistance to
Indonesian occupation, kicks off a series of planned visits to all Dili's
African partners in the Community of Portuguese- speaking Countries (CPLP).
After attending the July 26-27 CPLP summit in Sao Tome and Principe, the
Timorese leader is also scheduled to visit successively Angola, Guinea-Bissau
and Cape Verde.
