East Timor: Dili wants Portugal's Galp to invest in energy sector
Dili, Jan. 20 (Lusa) - The East Timorese government is eager for
Portugal's oil and gas company Galp Energia to participate in its
promising energy sector, a senior Dili official said Thursday.
"The government would like to see Galp operating in East
Timor", an aide to Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri told Lusa, adding
that the creation of a domestic fuel distribution network and the training
of Timorese personnel could be areas of "common interest".
The official's comments coincided with the end of a visit to East Timor
by two senior Galp Energia officers.
Carlos Bayan Ferreira, the head of the company's international
relations department, told Lusa the visit, which included meetings with
Alkatiri and President Xanana Gusmão, had "exceeded" Galp's
expectations.
"We were able to make a very interesting assessment of the
government's intentions and the opportunities that are arising", said
Bayan Ferreira, who was accompanied by the head of Galp's exploration and
development department, Carlos Alves.
Galp, he added, was looking at the possibility of investing in several
areas, including domestic fuel warehousing and distribution, and in oil
and gas exploration.
The trip to Dili by the Galp team was organized last November during a
visit to Lisbon by Timorese Foreign Minister José Ramos Horta.
