East Timor: Dili, Lisbon to sign new defense cooperation agreement next
week
Dili, Jan. 28 (Lusa) - Portugal and East Timor will sign a new military
cooperation accord next week during a three-day visit to Dili by Lisbon's
state secretary for defense, Jorge Neto.
Neto's visit, beginning Sunday, will signal the separation of bilateral
cooperation in the defense area from Lisbon's broader aid commitments to
East Timor that are under the auspices of the Foreign Ministry, officials
said.
According to official Timorese documents, Portugal is Dili's main
partner in defense cooperation, with current programs worth some euros 5.4
million, primarily in military training.
Neto is scheduled to hold talks with Defense Minister Roque Rodrigues
and Defense Forces' chief Gen. Taur Matan Ruak, as well as pay courtesy
calls on the president and prime minister.
Ten Portuguese officers are posted in East Timor, two of them serving
as advisors to in the office of the chief of staff.
