Dear
President Obama,
We are people of conscience
from the USA, Timor-Leste and other countries. We
live in Timor-Leste and are watching as thousands of
Native Americans from more than 300 tribes are
standing together in opposition to the Dakota Access
Pipeline project. We stand in solidarity with them
and demand that the construction of the pipeline be
stopped permanently.
We have been horrified by the violence
that police and National Guard forces have
used against peaceful, unarmed protectors;
by the destruction of sacred burial sites
and Native teepees and sweat lodges, by the
attempts to criminalize free media coverage.
The pipeline's construction must be
stopped before any further damage is done.

We recognize the urgency of
the situation in North Dakota and thus demand that
you act to stop further construction immediately.
The struggle on the banks of the Missouri River
is a struggle that impacts us all no matter where we
are or where we are from. As Environmentalist Bill
McKibben pointed out on Friday in the New York
Times, this “is a struggle for clean water,
environmental justice and a working climate.” You
have promised that there needs to be a ‘climate
test’ for all new projects, but this was not done.
Timor-Leste's people and government have been
outspoken supporters of international efforts to
reduce emissions to limit the damage caused by
climate change, which will have the most severe
impacts in impoverished agricultural islands like
this one. We urge the United States, as the world's
largest emitter of greenhouse gases, to stop the
destruction of all of our futures.
Rescind
the Army Corps of Engineers’ Permit for the Dakota
Access Pipeline NOW! There is no time to waste.
