East Timor: President Gusmão condemns Jakarta terror bombing
Dili, Aug. 6 (Lusa) - East Timor's president, Xanana Gusmão, wrote to
his Indonesian counterpart Wednesday, expressing his "vehement
condemnation" of the terrorist bombing in Jakarta Tuesday that killed
at least 14 people, injuring about 150.
In his message to President Megawati Sukarnoputri, a copy of which was
sent to Lusa in Dili, Gusmão described the hotel bombing as "an
attack against peace in Indonesia, the region and the world".
He underlined East Timor's commitment to working with Jakarta to
prevent such "cowardly actions" in future.
Meanwhile in Lisbon, Portuguese Foreign Minister António Martins da
Cruz also sent his Indonesian counterpart a message of
"sympathy" and "condolence", reaffirming the need for
"close international colaboration" in fighting international
terror.
The Jakarta bombing has been claimed by a radical Indonesian Islamic
organization, Jemaah Islamiya.

on Bombing in Jakarta
The Government and the People of Timor-Leste learned with outrage the
terrorist attack in Jakarta JW Marriott Hotel and express their profound
sympathy and condolences to the relatives and close friends of the
victims; and solidarity with the Government and the people of the Republic
of Indonesia.
As friends and neighbors, the Government and the People of Timor-Leste
offer their unconditional support to the Government and the people of the
Republic of Indonesia in their effort to eradicate extremism and terrorism
in the archipelago and in the region as a whole.
The Government and the People of Timor-Leste will continue with their
extremely limited means to cooperate with neighboring countries in the
region and internationally to neutralize the extremist elements whose
agenda is to destabilize and undermine our democratic way of life, our
freedom and democracy.
