Timor: Australia warns of possible terror strikes, asks 'extreme caution'
Dili, Sept. 5 (Lusa) - Australia warned Friday that terrorists could be
planning attacks in East Timor and appealed to its nationals there to take
"extreme precautions".
The warning, issued by the Australian Foreign Ministry, said Canberra
"continues to receive information that terrorist elements in the
region are planning attacks" against Australian targets in East
Timor.
It called for special precautions in Dili and in areas near the
Indonesian border.
There was no immediate reaction to the warning from authorities in Dili.
Hundreds of Australian soldiers and civilians participate in the UN's
peacekeeping and aid mission in East Timor.
The alert was the latest of several issued by Canberra or Washington
for East Timor during the past year, following the massive terrorist
bombing on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali.
There have been no such terror attacks in East Timor, and Dili on
occasion has shown irritation over the warnings from foreign governments.
