Indonesia makes top spook first ambassador to East Timor
Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri has nominated a senior
intelligence service member as the country's first ambassador to East
Timor.
Ahmad Bey Sofwan is a deputy head of the National Intelligence Agency
but his appointment must be endorsed by parliament.
Indonesia has had a diplomatic mission in East Timor since independence
in May 2002.
Human rights groups say the appointment of a member of the intelligence
service is inappropriate for the post, given the history of Indonesia and
East Timor.
