Subject: Ships hub tip for Dili
Northern Territory News (Australia)
September 20, 2003 Saturday Ships hub tip for Dili
By CHRIS CARTER
A shipping company has claimed Dili has the potential to become a
regional "trans-shipment hub".
Tony Haritos, who owns Haritos Shipping based in Dili, said business
was not booming in East Timor, but the groundwork was being laid for
future development.
"I think Darwin-Dili runs will not increase in the short term,
although they may increase when the railway comes and when industries
develop in East Timor," he said. "But we would look at using
Dili as a trans-shipment hub for other locations in the region."
Haritos Shipping's landing craft, Labitra Oktorisa, runs cargo from
Darwin to Dili each week, as well as domestic runs in Timor.
Its cargo includes foodstuffs and fuel. "We are taking roughly 20
containers a week," Mr Haritos said.
