East Timor: Month-old dengue fever outbreak claims 12 lives, mostly children Dili, Feb. 4 (Lusa) - The month-old outbreak of dengue hemorrhagic fever in East Timor has taken 12 lives, 11 of them under the age of 14, a medical source in Dili said Friday. Eighty confirmed cases of dengue fever have been registered since the outbreak was first reported Jan. 5, and 39 other likely cases await confirmation, the source told Lusa. The type of dengue affecting the country is the worst of several forms of the fever. World Health Organization officials working with Timorese authorities, the source said, are preparing to declare the country an endemic area for the mosquito-borne disease. Most of the cases, 107, have been registered in Dili, with the remainder scattered among four of the country's 13 districts. Health officials feared the situation could worsen with the continuation of the rainy season and poor sanitary conditions in urban and rural communities. EL/SAS. Lusa
