East Timor: Dengue hemorrhagic fever death toll rises to 20
Dili, Feb. 17 (Lusa) - Dengue hemorrhagic fever that broke out in East
Timor six weeks ago has already claimed 20 lives, all but one under the
age of 14, Dili health officials said Thursday.
Timorese authorities have registered 178 cases of dengue hemorrhagic
fever since Jan. 5 and the situation is being monitored by the World
Health Organization, which is close to classifying Timor as an endemic
dengue zone.
In neighboring Indonesia, the mosquito-borne infectious disease is
equally rampant, having killed 120 people out of the 5,500 to have
contracted dengue hemorrhagic fever, a more severe and often fatal form of
dengue.
