East Timor: Lisbon trains, supplies uniforms for new defence force
recruits
Dili, March 9 (Lusa) - Portugal donated on Wednesday uniforms and other
kit for 260 privates in East Timor's Defense Force, who were also trained
with part of Lisbon's euros 4 million military cooperation package with
Dili.
The equipment was handed over at Portugal's Dili embassy by Ambassador
João Ramos Pinto to Lieut. Gen. Taur Matan Ruak, commander of Timor's
defense force.
Lisbon and Dili signed their latest military cooperation accord in
February.
Portugal, the biggest donor to Timor's defense sector, pledged to fund
operation and command of the Dili's armed forces, which have gradually
assumed responsibility for national security since the new nation's
independence in 2002.
