Ex-President of Cape Verde becomes UN envoy to East Timor
Praia, Cape Verde, 09/21 - The former Cape Verdean President, Antonio
Mascarenhas Monteiro, has accepted his appointment as special representative of
UN secretary-general, Kofi Annan, for East Timor, officials affirmed here
Wednesday.
Mascarenhas Monteiro, who is currently in New York, will also lead the UN
Mission in East Timor (UNMIT), whose mandate was extended by six months by the
UN Security Council.
He replaces Japanese Sukehiro Hasegawa, who has been leading UNMIT since 2004
but his tenure ended on Wednesday.
Lawyer Mascarenhas Monteiro was president of the high court of justice in
Cape Verde before becoming the first president of the republic elected after the
political openness of the archipelago in 1991.
