12 Jun 01 20:08 East Timor: Campaigning for Aug. 30 Election to Begin on July 15

East Timor's chief UN transition administrator, Sergio Vieira de Mello, has signed an order confirming that the campaign period for the August 30 elections will begin on July 15.

The order, released to the public Tuesday in Dili, was signed last week and sent directly to the Independent Election Commission. It also confirms the Aug. 30 election date for the 88 members of the future constituent assembly, who will be charged with drawing up East Timor's national constitution.

A total of 13 parties have so far applied to take part in the balloting.

A Commission communique sent to Lusa specified that eight of the parties have already received their certification papers.

The registration period for parties ends on June 24, several days after the end of the voter registration period.

A UN spokesman confirmed Tuesday that more than 706,000 people, or about 87 percent of East Timor's estimated population, had concluded the registration process.

Among them are Jose Ramos Horta, the 1996 Nobel Peace co- laureate and the transition administration's foreign minister, who registered Tuesday in Dili.
